Saw this on youtube last week. It's clever, at times, but I really wouldn't go so far to call any of it funny. More of the stupid immature end, to be honest.

too much hating. This stuff is pretty funny, especially the commercials. They're really professional looking.

I don't think people get that this is supposed to be a "taping" of a late night show, hence the milling around and the hype-man. If you've been to a taping of Conan or Colbert it's very much like this.

the show was neither as bad nor as great as people are making it out to be.

At times, Jeff Julian made me cry tears of joy, but honestly the improv made me want to wrap myself in barbed wire and roll down a hill.

Notes:

The improv groups (Fruit Paunch & Sweeps) served as "guests." Their segments are not included in the seven part video opus.

Also, Jeff Julian plays a character named Jeff Julian. Although the real Jeff Julian served as one of the shows writers, the character he plays is not himself. See: Stephen Colbert.

the show was pretty good, but the highlight from what I've seen so far is the Dewey skit:

agreed, the improv groups at columbia are just terrible... entirely cringe worthy and awful and it hurts to watch them stand up and embarrass themselves on stage. please can someone ban them now for their own good.

Jeff Julian in real life is a really nice guy who eats mostly candy. He's pretty much un-hateable.

If the show's audience viewing it in the Black Box hated it, I would believe that it was a bad show, but they did not. Performances have much different timing and audience involvement than TV shows, and TV show tapings that are intended to be taped shows are different than performances framed as tv show tapings. It's understandable that this could look unfunny as a TV show because you don't have the full setting.

If you don't like the commercials, then there's definitely a real difference there.

improv can be creative and interesting. Fruit Paunch and Sweeps, however, consistently demonstrated a capacity for neither.

The only people that ever watch them are

a) dutiful friends,

b) friends of dutiful friends asked to attend out of companionship or sympathy,

c) otherwise forced to watch them as a consequence of attending another, usually better, show - such as Jeff Julian's.

about the improv troupes, but they are not on the video...so everyone chill out. Having seen it live, I thought show was hilarious (the commercials especially).

And for the record, Jeff is a cool and funny guy, but the show was a collaborative effort between a bunch of people, not his ego project. So whether you loved it or hated it, redirect your praise/venom away from that tender-loving, candy-eating ass clown.

for line of the night not enough people laughed at.

the problem with the on-campus improv groups is they're too bloated. there's funny kids in both, but they each have way too many (bad) members to sustain any sort of goodness for longer than a scene or two. i think if you took the top two or three from each, you wouldn't get something so embarassing. or maybe not.
