There's no way to comment on the Eye story, so I'll post it here. As far as low cost, all ages venues go, the Tank in Tribeca is another option. Tickets to the music shows are usually $8 or so. The comedy shows they host are usually fun, too. And beer is cheap. [external link to www.thetanknyc.org]

most of the shows at Cake Shop are 21+. They occasionally throw all ages stuff in their record store but the venue downstairs is 21+ 90% of the time

People need to stop calling Silent Barn and DBA "venues". Spending an hour and a half on the subway to find out the bands are playing in some guy's kitchen (oh and there's a second "stage" in the basement) is an experience only New York could offer.

Not that I'm complaining, getting that close to a band for $5 is always great. And the incredibly lax BYOB policy ensured that by the time the main act went on, a plea for "everyone to move closer to the washer/dryer" no longer fazed.

But why pretend it's a venue?
