The Bwog
Sad News at Appletree

Tipster Armin Rosen alerts Bwog to some tragic news. Dr. Phil, a night-shift employee at Appletree and the subject of this Blue and White profile has passed away. He was 56 years old.

Dr. Phil is responsible for beginning Appletree's movie rental program in 1992, but he may be most famous for his impressive vintage Columbia postcard collection, which he proudly displayed throughout the market, or perhaps for his preference for wearing a lab coat. However you knew him, he will be missed.

Bird Fever

As Bwog blossoms into an around-the-clock Morningside Heights bird-related news source, we present you with two stories of from the cold-hearted avian world.

First, news of a hawk kill. Alex Weinberg reports that around 11 this morning, Hawkmadinejad "swooped down and ruined a squirrel in front of Avery." Awesome.

Meet a very special goose after the jump!

Breaking News: Hawk Takes Pigeon

Right this minute, on the lawn in front of John Jay, the hawk that's been spotted near Lewisohn and the LLC is lunching on a pigeon. It swooped down and snatched it in dramatic fashion. Onlookers, please send in your photos and stories. Bored studiers, please suggest names for our hawk. Apparently, they're territorial, so he/she may be around for a while.

So It Goes

The cruel cycle of nature continues--right in front of Lewisohn! Writes a tipster:

"Just at noon (right now!) I saw a GIANT hawk in front of the sculpture facing Lewisohn, chowing down on some small animal. It's neat to see real wild life in the city."

And it's neat to see such fitting metaphors for our transient, fragile and ever-so-vulnerable state of existence unfolding before our very eyes. Have a nice day everyone!

Library Assistant Killed in Harlem

Bwog has recieved tips that a Law Library technical assistant was shot and killed Tuesday night by suspects still at-large. Malik Murray was at the Aroma Chinese Restaurant on West 125th Street, according to reports from the Spectator and the New York Daily News.

Funeral services were held for Malik at Washington Memorial Park at 12:30 this afternoon. Our condolences go out to those close to Murray. Bwog will continue to post developments on this story as they emerge.

UPDATE May 11th, 2008:

Bwog received an email from Faatimah Smith-Murray, the ex-wife of Malik Murrah and mother of his seven year old son. Smith-Murray has provided her own account of what happened one year ago, which we've included below:

"Malik had just finished teaching an aikido class at Columbia and rode is bike to the New Aroma Chinese food restaurant around 11:35 p.m. When he got there, his neighbor (a woman) was in an argument with the Spanish delivery guy. Malik was trying to calm her down, but she had already called her son and told him she was agruing with the Spanish delivery guy. When her son and his friend got to the store, they asked "where is the Spanish guy you was arguing with?" The woman said, "he left, but this guy over here was popping junk!" (referring to Malik) The boys started pushing Malik around then left the store. Malik went to the door way to make sure the Spanish delivery guy got away. The friend of the woman's son shot 5 times into the store, shooting Malik 3 times in the torso.

The 17 year old boy that shot Malik surrender himself to the police a few days after the shooting. He's still in jail waiting trial, which should commence at the end of this month.

Malik was a wonderful father to our son, Muhammad. There's not a day that goes by that Muhammad doesn't ask about his "ba ba" (African for father). They used to spend every weekend together, they had a VERY close father and son bond. Malik is GREATLY missed by all who knew him."

More stuff you shouldn't have saved on a public computer.

However, only the artists know the intentions that lie behind these choices. Since they are dead, we will never know but can guess.

These artists seem almost the equivalent of psychologists in that rather than telling us what is important, they depict it through the use of geometry, color, light, contour lines, and the placement of figures, and they devise many ways for our eyes to be guided to a single place, the Madonna and the child. Some questions remain.
