Fire in Nussbaum Block

Seven fire trucks and emergency management vehicles have congregated outside of the Nussbaum block this morning as smoke seeps out of the lower level. Nussbaum residents have been evacuated, though fire officials seem to be focusing their efforts on entering Community Food and Juice, where most of the smoke appears to be coming from.

UPDATE (12:50 p.m.): Housing has sent the an e-mail to Nussbaum residents apprising them of the fire's impact on their residence. The e-mail is posted after the jump.

Tipster Beatrice Lee sends us the following photo of the situation, which we will bring you updates on as news warrants.

Taxi Explodes Outside East Campus

Smoke, heroism and disappointment cloud EC and its environs! Eyewitness report from Bwogger John Klopfer:

"Minutes ago, outside of the Center for Career Education on Morningside Drive, a loud whoomph was heard and the smell of gas filled the Columbia University Tutoring and Translating Agency. Alarmed students poured out of its offices as flames shot six feet into the air through the hood of a taxicab parked just outside. The driver valiantly fought the flames with a small extinguisher, which availed him little. Within minutes, no fewer than three fire engines arrived on the scene. As bored firemen bandied about their axes and neighborhood children looked on in awe, the first engine's hose was brought to finish the job. Now, the driver is standing by his car making phone calls, looking disappointed as the fire crews roll out."

They Coulda Been Fighting a Real Fire

fire officersOh those Krazy Karman Kids!

A brigade of three fire engines and two support vehicles showed up at Carman tonight around 10:15 to squelch a firey blaze of nothing. According to a few of the dozens of students milling about outside, this is the third or fourth false alarm the building's had in the last two days (and EC's been having them left and right too). A harsh blinking light from a fifth-story window betrayed the source of the genius who pulled the alarm or otherwise caused it to go off.

This has got to cost the University something...

Name readings? Fire Trucks!

MITIn other news from Cambridge, Bwog recently became aware of a most excellent method of commemorating the heroes of September 11th. How are MIT geeks so wonderful? Why is the Low Dome never graced by random objects? And how, how did they do it?
