Bwog is in slow motion this week due to Thanksgiving.

As the fundraising for the presidential campaign wraps up, the Chronicle of Higher Education has compiled a total of all donations from "professors, college administrators, and other educators," and has found that Columbia actually ranks higher among institutions donating to McCain than ones donating to Obama.

In fairness, this is only a shocking stat before one compares the actual amounts given: $267,000 to Obama (5th behind University of California, Harvard, Stanford, and UChicago) compared with only $35,000 to McCain (behind only Cal and Harvard). To the surprise of no one, as the Chronicle puts it in their headline, "Donors From Academe Favor Obama by a Wide Margin." Of all institutions in New York, Columbia accounts for just over 1/3rd of McCain donations, and just above 20% of Obama donations.

Dean of SEAS, Zvi Galilwho captured the hearts of every engineer with his idiosyncratic personal e-mails and his Australian-Israeli accentmay be leaving us for his native Israel as the new president of Tel Aviv University.
A senior source at the university says he is the leading candidate for the presidency, according to Israeli daily, Haaretz. On November 8, the executive council will select or reject the candidate.
Galil, who was appointed dean of SEAS in 1995, was responsible for the $26 million donation from Chinese businessman Charles Wei-Hsun Fu, after whom the school is now named.
In other news, engineers learn they can cry too.

Some of the delightful things Bwog has seen around the neighborhood on this pleasant, balmy Saturday:

People on 110th street were loading these marked boxes into a big truck. On closer inspection, the boxes turned out to be penny harvest kits. Sixth grade fundraiser anyone?

And some kids were playing leap frog outside John Jay dining hall. Said one "too cool for school" boy disdainfully, to his juvenile peers: "Come on, you are fifth and fourth graders!"
